Safe Lights

by KC Eng

Held once a year, the Chingay parade first took place on 4 February 1973. It was conceived by the late Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew as a compensation for the ban on firecrackers. The ban was viewed unfavourably by Singaporeans, as it was perceived to dampen the festive mood of Chinese New Year.

The first Chingay Parade turned out to be very successful and it brought much cheer to the general public.

Today as I sit here constrained, safe from any fire hazards and sharing the space with fellow Singaporeans, I enjoy the safe lights that still shine today as it did in 1973.
