FAST & FURIOUS
BOBBY TONELLI AND THE LEICA SL
Hi, everyone! This is Bobby Tonelli and I’m excited to share my experiences using the Leica SL with the support of Leica Store Singapore while filming Season 3 of Celebrity Car Wars, airing Sundays on History Asia.
For my last entry in this series, I want to touch on low light performance. The Leica SL Typ 601 has a rated ISO from 50 -12,500 and can be pushed up to 50,000. Now, no one will really need to use ISO 50,000 where you would expect to sacrifice a good amount of detail and artifacts in the image.
But, when talking about real world usage and the Leica SL, I found that I didn't really need to go beyond ISO 6,400 to capture what I wanted for the most part. I could retain adequate detail, and my post-processing on the noise level was at a minimum.
On this shoot, the fastest lenses I had was the Leica APO-Summicron-SL f/2 lenses, so I had to be selective in my low light shots. The f/2 is great for day and dusk, but night time is where the Leica Summilux-SL 50mm f/1.4 ASPH, Leica Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH and Leica Noctilux-M 50mm f/0.95 ASPH come into play (the latter two lenses can be used on the SL with an adapter) because they were designed for low light photography, and of course, beautiful bokeh. There were a few times where I wish I had one of these lenses with me, but we use the tools we have and try to capture the best image possible.
Overall, I was happy with the low light results. Colors were fantastic and details were there even when I was pushing the ISO a bit.
Hope you enjoyed my journey with the Leica SL on Celebrity Car Wars. I really enjoyed using the camera over the duration of the show’s filming. It’s robust, has phenomenal optics, and just a great travel companion overall. I will miss it. :)
